The Big Bang

Dear Reader,

Statement of Purpose:

This blog is a repository for my thoughts on an idea that is helping me cope with uncertainty. As I understand it, entropy is a principle that states every thing in universe is perpetually moving towards thermodynamic equilibrium, or diversity to sameness.

Entropy is decay, order to disorder, and the universe as a whole is rapidly and constantly striving to achieve it. Crumbling, breaking apart, dying. Life itself is a backlash against entropy. It brings order, organization to disparate unconnected parts that even once united are subject to a relentless current, the pressure of the force to degenerate. Read: Sameness is death.

The fact that we like order and highways and right angles and Martha Stewart's suggestions on desktop organization is an unintended acknowledgement that we are alive, fighting disorder, managing chaos. (I love Martha Stewart)

How is it possible that within a universe bent on it's own destruction there is room for an outcry in the opposite direction? And statistically, it is unlikely that we are the only ones. Our bodies are complex interlocking systems of energy exchanges, building themselves form molecules, order from chaos, and it's involuntary, it just fucking happens!

Then beyond the biological, we build empires of reason, law, geometry.

I recently read a book by Ian M Banks that said something thats stuck with me. As a main character lay contemplating her own death she came to the realization that she was, "just a piece of the universe thinking to itself." Ian M. Banks died of cancer shortly after completing this book.

Well now that I've had a few beers, it's time for bed. Goodnight, Dear Reader.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Alter
